Setting up Hebrew in Open Office Writer
July 23, 2008
Once your computer is set up for Hebrew, you still have to set up Hebrew capablilities in Writer. (Right-to-Left is referred to as Complex Text Layout, or CTL.)
Open a new document and go to Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Languages
Check off the “Enabled for Complex Text Layout (CTL)” box.
Set your Western Language for “English” and your CTL for “Hebrew”
Click OK and you’re good to go.

Thanks a lot! I’ve moved to linux and I’ve been having trouble in setting up my open office. Now it works perfect.

I have tried, pages, neo-office, open office, word and am stil not able to properly copy-paste biblical hebrew texts to my word-processor. The vocalizations do not align properly with the consonants. Unless, i do not use a nice font. With a font that does not look like proper hebrew handwriting ther is not a problem. Is there a way to solve this?

Sorry for the delay. The problem is the font. The best font for the job is the Society for Biblical Literature. http://www.sbl-site.org/educational/biblicalfonts.aspx
If you’re not happy using this font, not sure what else to do. You can play around with the many Hebrew fonts out there to see if any are more acceptable to you, but the SBL are designed to do what you want.

I am running OpenOffice 3 on a ubuntu linux netbook. I am about to start learning hebrew this summer, and am curious if there is anyway I can install hebrew fonts on my computer with a linux OS. The SBL site seems to only provide fonts compatible with Windows and Mac. Do you know how to do this or of any resources that might help?
Thanks
